Limited Series · May & June

Prom mini sessions are a seasonal offering — available in May and June only, timed around local high school prom calendars. Spots go fast, especially around peak prom dates in the Region. Book early to secure your preferred date and time.

Based in Doon South, Kitchener and serving teens and families across Waterloo, Cambridge, and the surrounding Region, Greasypixel Photography offers outdoor prom portrait mini sessions that go far beyond the standard gymnasium photo.

The Philosophy

The gym photo is the record. These are the portraits.

Prom is one of the last big shared rituals of high school — and the standard photo lineup in the gym doesn't do justice to what the night actually feels like. Outdoor prom portraits in the soft golden light of a May or June evening in Kitchener-Waterloo capture something real: the nervous energy, the perfectly coordinated group, the couple who got dressed up together for the first time. These are the images that end up framed.

Sessions are kept focused and purposeful — close to your home or venue, timed to fit naturally into the schedule before you head off for the night. No forced poses, no wasted time. Just a dedicated window of natural light and genuine excitement before everything begins.

The Pillars

— What Every Prom Session Is Built Around

Beyond the Gymnasium

The standard prom photo is taken under fluorescent lights with a rented backdrop. Outdoor portraits in the soft, directional light of a spring evening in Kitchener or Waterloo produce images that actually look like the people in them — no harsh flash, no queued-up gym awkward. Just you, dressed up, in natural light that does the work.

Paced Around Your Day

Prom nights have a schedule — the limo is booked, the reservation is made, the group has somewhere to be. Sessions at Greasypixel are planned around your timeline and your departure point. Solo sessions run 30 minutes, couples 30 to 45, and groups up to an hour. That's enough time to do it properly without eating into the night.

The Energy Before

There is a specific kind of energy that exists in the hour before prom — and it's the thing that's worth documenting. The anticipation, the finishing touches, the group gathering for the first time in full dress. That's what I'm there to capture. Not just two people standing still, but the actual feeling of the moment before the night begins.

Kitchener Prom Session Locations

Kitchener offers some genuinely stunning outdoor portrait backdrops for prom season — Victoria Park with its manicured gardens and evening light, the architectural character of the downtown core, and quiet residential greenways that photograph beautifully without a crowd. For May and June sessions, the light in Kitchener parks around golden hour is some of the best the Region offers.

Waterloo Prom Session Locations

Waterloo Park, the Laurel Creek Conservation Area, and the open green spaces near Wilfrid Laurier University all make excellent prom portrait locations. The mature tree canopy across much of Waterloo softens the evening light naturally — ideal conditions when everyone is dressed up and the goal is to look effortless.

Cambridge Prom Session Locations

Cambridge offers a distinct visual character for prom sessions — the heritage stone architecture of Galt, the Grand River trails, and the quieter residential streets near local high schools all provide backdrop options that feel elevated without requiring travel. If you're based in Cambridge, I'll recommend locations close to your home or venue to keep the pre-prom schedule intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should we book our prom session?

As early as possible — ideally 4 to 6 weeks before your prom date. May and June are the busiest months for prom sessions across Waterloo Region, and specific dates fill quickly once local school prom calendars are announced. If you know your prom date, don't wait. I release limited spots each season and once they're gone, they're gone.

Where exactly do sessions take place?

Outdoor, at a location of your choice anywhere across Kitchener, Waterloo, or Cambridge. I'll suggest locations based on your neighbourhood, your dress colours, and the look you're going for — whether that's a lush garden setting, a clean architectural backdrop, or a wide open green space. Ideally the location is close to where you're getting ready to keep the pre-prom timeline smooth.

How many people can be in a session?

The Solo tier is for one person, The Couple tier covers two, and The Squad accommodates groups of up to six. For larger groups, the Bespoke option gives us the time and flexibility to do justice to everyone in the frame. Note that larger groups take longer to organise — if you're bringing a big crew, book the extended time so no one feels rushed.

How long does a prom mini session actually take?

Solo sessions run approximately 30 minutes, couples 30 to 45 minutes, and groups up to 6 people around 45 to 60 minutes. That's enough time to work through a variety of setups, try different spots at your location, and get shots that feel natural rather than rushed. I'd rather take the time to do it right than wrap up early with portraits that don't reflect how great everyone looked.

What happens if it rains on prom day?

I monitor forecasts closely as your date approaches and will reach out if there's a concern. If the weather is genuinely unsuitable, we'll discuss options: rescheduling to the next available date before your prom, or finding a sheltered outdoor setting that still works for portraits. Light overcast skies — common in May and June in Ontario — actually photograph beautifully and eliminate harsh shadows. Full rain is the only real issue.
