Limited Series · April & May

Mother's Day mini sessions open for booking in April and fill quickly — especially the weekend before Mother's Day. These are among the most in-demand sessions of the year. Don't wait until May to reach out.

Based in Doon South, Kitchener and serving families across Waterloo, Cambridge, and the surrounding Region, Greasypixel Photography offers Mother's Day mini sessions in a private in-house studio and select outdoor locations — relaxed, real, and done before the day gets away from you.

The Philosophy

She organises every family photo. These ones are for her.

Most mums have thousands of photographs of their children and almost none of themselves. Mother's Day mini sessions exist to fix that — a focused, unhurried portrait session with the people she loves most, in a setting that actually flatters her. No chaotic full-day shoot, no complicated logistics. Just a beautiful session together that produces images worth printing.

Sessions are available in my private in-house studio in Kitchener or outdoors at a location of your choice across the Region. Studio sessions offer a clean, controlled environment with consistent light — ideal for younger children or families who want a polished, timeless look. Outdoor sessions bring in the warmth of spring greenery and natural golden light, and work beautifully for families who feel more at ease outside.

The Pillars

— What Every Mother's Day Session Is Built Around

She's the Subject

Every session is built around her — how she looks, how she feels, how the light lands. That means choosing a location or studio setup that flatters, directing poses that feel natural rather than stiff, and giving enough time that no one feels rushed. Mothers tend to be the most self-conscious people in a portrait session. Part of my job is making sure that wears off before the first shot is taken.

Studio or Outdoors — Your Call

The private in-house studio in Kitchener gives you consistent, beautiful light regardless of the weather — a clean, neutral setting that keeps the focus on the people in the frame. Outdoor sessions bring in the textures and warmth of spring in Waterloo Region — blossoms, green canopy, open sky. Both options produce stunning results; the right choice depends on your family and what feels most like you.

Done Before the Day Begins

Mother's Day has a way of filling up fast — brunch reservations, family visits, activities with the kids. Sessions are timed to slot in cleanly, with lengths designed around your family size. Book a morning slot, have beautiful portraits by the afternoon, and still make it to dinner. The goal is to add something meaningful to the day, not take it over.

Kitchener — Studio & Outdoor

The private in-house studio in Kitchener is available for all Mother's Day mini session tiers — a quiet, relaxed space with controlled light and no weather dependency. For outdoor sessions in Kitchener, Victoria Park and the surrounding greenway offer some of the Region's most reliable spring portrait backdrops, with soft morning light and enough space to spread out.

Waterloo — Outdoor Sessions

Waterloo's parks come alive in May — Waterloo Park, Laurel Creek Conservation Area, and the quieter residential green spaces throughout the city all make excellent outdoor session locations. The spring canopy in Waterloo softens the light beautifully, and the relaxed atmosphere translates well when you've got children involved.

Cambridge — Outdoor Sessions

Cambridge offers an understated beauty for spring portraits — the Grand River trails, the heritage character of Galt, and the green spaces surrounding local neighbourhoods all provide a natural, unhurried backdrop. For Cambridge families, I'll recommend an outdoor location close to you so the morning stays easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer both indoor studio and outdoor options?

Yes — all Mother's Day mini session tiers are available either in my private in-house studio in Kitchener or outdoors at a location of your choice across Kitchener, Waterloo, or Cambridge. Studio sessions offer consistent light and a controlled environment — great for younger children or unpredictable spring weather. Outdoor sessions bring in the natural warmth of May greenery and work beautifully when families feel more relaxed outside. You choose when you book.

How far in advance should we book?

Early April at the latest — ideally as soon as you know you want to do it. Mother's Day weekend slots are the first to go, followed closely by the weekend before. Once the calendar fills, it fills. I'd rather turn someone away in February than in April when there's nothing left to offer.

What should we wear?

Co-ordinated, not matching. Choose a colour palette — soft neutrals, warm tones, muted pastels — and let each person interpret it in their own outfit. Avoid busy patterns or logos. For studio sessions, lighter tones tend to photograph beautifully against the neutral background. For outdoor sessions, earthy and warm tones complement the spring greenery. After booking I'll send a style guide with specific suggestions.

Can we include Dad or other family members?

These sessions are designed specifically for mothers and their children — that's the intention behind the offering and what makes the images meaningful. If you're looking for full family portraits that include everyone, my family photography sessions are a better fit and available year-round. The Lineage tier does allow for multi-generational images — grandmothers and daughters included — which is the one exception to the mum-and-kids format.

What if my kids won't cooperate?

They usually don't — and that's fine. I work with children regularly and I'm not going to stand stiff in front of them with a camera waiting for everyone to smile on command. We move, we play, we let them warm up at their own pace. Some of the best Mother's Day portraits happen in the unscripted moments between the posed ones. Come with low expectations for behaviour and high expectations for the images. It tends to work out.

Can this session be purchased as a gift?

Absolutely — and it makes a genuinely meaningful Mother's Day gift. Husbands, partners, and grown children book these regularly on behalf of mum. Just reach out through the contact form and mention it's a gift — I'll handle the details and keep everything coordinated so the surprise stays intact if needed. A portrait session is one of the few gifts that actually gets framed.

Is this suitable for babies and toddlers?

Yes — and some of the most beautiful Mother's Day portraits involve babies and toddlers precisely because they're unpredictable. I'm experienced working with very young children and I pace the session around them, not the other way around. For babies under 12 months, the studio option is often the better choice — a familiar indoor environment with no wind, no distractions, and a temperature you can control. For toddlers, outdoor sessions with open space to move around tend to work really well.

Do you offer prints, or just digital files?

Both. All sessions include fully retouched digital files delivered via an online gallery — yours to download, share, and print as you choose. Printed products are also available starting at $30, including prints, wall art, and other keepsakes. If you're interested in prints, mention it when you book and I'll walk you through the options.
